CINCINNATI (WKRC) – A new mother, Elyse Carere, is expressing her heartfelt gratitude to the team at UC Health for their role in saving her son’s life. Carmine, born prematurely at just 29 weeks and weighing barely three pounds, has had a challenging journey that began unexpectedly while his mother was on a business trip away from her New York home.
“I just woke up feeling a little bit off,” Carere said, describing the onset of her labor. Initially dismissing her symptoms as minor cramps, she decided to visit a nearby hospital emergency department to ensure everything was alright. There, she received the shocking news: “This is not just cramps, you’re actually in active labor,” she recalled being told.
Carmine was born shortly after and was immediately transported to UC Health’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Nurses Samantha Lawless and Lindsey Nunn were among the first to care for him. “We gave him like pressure, that kept his lungs open and prevented him from collapsing,” Nunn explained…
