Mild November days will spill into the weekend ahead of a dose of winter cold

Mother Nature followed a familiar script today, one that included bright sunshine and mild November highs. There was a new character, a cold front, but it turns out it was just a bit part. The front swept through with very little impact, switching winds and trimming a few degrees off of afternoon highs.

We’ll see two more cold fronts impact the area through the weekend, and it’s the second that will pack some winter punch.

Until then, it’s steady as she goes. We’ll enjoy bright, mild days and cool nights.

Winds will pick up on Thursday with gusts approaching 30 mph. This will be ahead of an approaching cold front that will arrive early Friday. There will be a round of clouds early in the day, and maybe a few light showers to the north and east, but most areas will remain dry.

Another cold front will sweep through late Saturday, and that’s the one to watch. Temperatures will be mild again, but look for readings to turn sharply colder by Sunday morning. Winds will pick up, too, becoming very gusty as the cold air arrives.

Some of the model guidance is even showing a signal for drizzle early in the day on Sunday, and possibly even some snow flurries.

Clouds will clear out by afternoon, but temperatures won’t warm much. Afternoon highs in the upper 30s to mid-40s will make for our coldest day yet this fall, quickly followed by our coldest morning.

Prepare for an extended hard freeze Sunday night into Monday morning. Bring in anything that is even somewhat cold-sensitive. It’s also a good time to get your home ready for the winter season.

This time of the year, winter cold usually comes in short bursts, and we’ll find a quick turnaround in temperatures with highs near 70° by the middle of next week…
