Murder charge added for Jacksonville inmate accused of beating cellmate a week before her death

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Virginia Hampton, 58, is now charged with murder after allegedly beating her cellmate in the Duval County jail.

Jema Schunke, 47, was found injured inside her cell on Friday, Aug. 15, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Schunke was taken to the hospital, but after progressively worsening in condition, she was pronounced dead seven days later.

Hampton was arrested for battery shortly after Schunke was hospitalized. Two months later, on Oct. 23, she was rearrested for 2nd-degree murder after the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide due to blunt force injuries…
