Developer proposes police headquarters for Firestone building

DOWNTOWN AKRON — The City of Akron Oct. 27 received one request for proposal (RFP) for the former Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. Plant 1 building, which could save a portion of the building from being demolished.

Amerimar Realty Co., based in Philadelphia, submitted the proposal outlining plans to turn the front bay of the building into the new headquarters for the Akron Police Department (APD) and preserving the clock tower. Amerimar is no stranger to Akron, as in 2016 they transformed the warehouse next door to the plant into the Russel M. Pry Building, which houses county offices. The $24 million rehabilitation was funded by more than $9 million in federal and state historic tax credits.
