New autism-friendly indoor playground coming to Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A new indoor playground and community center opening in Grand Rapids next year will offer a space aimed at kids with autism and their parents.

Sensory Park is set to open at 2023 Eastern Ave. SE near Burton Street in the spring. The all-inclusive indoor sensory playground will offer a space for kids to play, mental health resources and support for parents. While it’s aimed at kids with autism and sensory processing differences, it will be open to everyone.

“Here at Sensory Park, we offer emotional, social and gross motor development through play,” Sensory Park owner Erikka Kneeland said. “We’ll also offer mental health services for not only the children, but the mother as well, because I truly believe helping parents helps the family.”

It will have a jungle-themed playroom where kids can work on motor skills and socialization, and an ocean-themed sensory room with things kids can feel, touch, hear or smell. Plus, an Arctic-themed quiet room will offer an igloo to sit in, weighted blankets and polar bears on the walls. A space for parents will offer sweets for sale from local bakeries…
