Community effort saves Veterans Day event at Fort Custer amid shutdown

ROSS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The consequences of the federal government shutdown continue to grow as the days wear on.

National cemeteries around the country announced Wednesday that they will not be able to support Veterans Day programming like usual if the government remains closed through Tuesday.

Fort Custer National Cemetery itself typically provides a stage, public address system, chairs and coordinates the flyover for the annual ceremony, among a host of other things. It won’t be able to this year. But local communities are stepping up to make it happen.

“Let’s show those guys in Washington that they aren’t going to stop us,” Col. Frank Walker told News 8. “We are going to have a Veterans Day program at Fort Custer National Cemetery when it is supposed to happen.”…
