Toledo, Ohio, known as the ‘Glass City,’ is currently experiencing a labor strike at Libbey Glass. Members of IAM Local 1297 (District 54) began their strike on August 23, 2025. They are joined by three other unions, representing more than 500 employees. The unions state that the company has not bargained in good faith.
The main issues for the union members include mandatory overtime, increased health insurance costs, and concerns about changes to union rights and protections. IAM Local 1297 members say these issues affect both current and future workers. Chief Shop Steward Dan Canterbury said the strike is also about protecting jobs for future glassmakers in Toledo.
During the strike, the IAM has filed several Unfair Labor Practice charges against Libbey Glass. The union claims the company has refused to negotiate.
