Canine virus affects Sioux Falls Area Humane Society

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society says they have one case of canine distemper and lost one life due to the devastating disease.

Canine distemper is a contagious virus that spreads through airborne exposure, and affects a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. This causes fever, lethargy, coughing, sneezing and progresses into seizures, tremors, and paralysis.

All dog kennels were closed on Monday to deep clean and disinfect the area, and staff are monitoring every dog in their care.

PCR tests for the high-risk dogs will be conducted, though adds a significant financial impact to the shelter at $75 per test…
