African-American soldier from the Revolutionary War gets his Southwest Michigan honors

An African-American Revolutionary War soldier who survived the harsh winter of 1778 with George Washington at Valley Forge will be honored near the farm in the Kalamazoo County area where he lived out his last years and is buried.

A plaque honoring Thomas Campbell will be dedicated in a 3 p.m. ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 8, at the entrance to the Gilmore Car Museum, 6865 W. Hickory Road at M-43.

“We try to place (plaques) near the burial site of the patriot,” said David Van Hoof, past president of the Joseph B. Westnedge chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, which serves Southwest Michigan, of the reason permission was sought to place it at the car museum.
