Kalamazoo Planning Commission denies controversial rezoning request near preserve

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A parcel of land near the Asylum Lake Preserve in Kalamazoo is again at the center of a rezoning request. The proposed change has stirred concern from a preservation group.

The lot in question, 4301 Stadium Drive, sits near the intersection of Stadium Drive and Drake Road. It is currently zoned for residential use, but an application hopes to change that to community commercial. The parcel is backed to the 274-acre preserve. Its winding trails and quiet location have been a draw to Kalamazoo residents and visitors.

“Just a beautiful and open place, I really enjoyed it,” first-time visitor Donald Pasmore said Thursday.
