Winter Haven seeks artists interested in creating a new downtown mural. Here are the details

Winter Haven is seeking artists who have a bold, contemporary vision of what the city’s residents value.

The city intends to have a vibrant mural featured on the downtown parking garage’s wall facing the alleyway and Central Ave. It has issued a call for artist submissions through Dec. 19.

What kind of mural is the city looking for?

“The mural should embody the spirit of our community — celebrating local pride, iconic imagery, and a hometown feel with a bright and uplifting style. The mural will serve as a long-lasting landmark that attracts visitors and showcases the unique character of Winter Haven,” read the city’s website.

The parking garage, 220 Avenue A NW, is considered a key location in downtown. The city has called for submitted designs to be eye-catching, colorful and contemporary. Themes that explore Winter Haven’s unique history, culture and environment are encouraged.

What are the selection criteria?

  • Artists must be 18 years of age or older. Minors can apply if a legal guardian will sign off on full rights to the artwork
  • Designs must be appropriate for public viewing and accessible to a wide audience
  • Judging criteria will includ artists quality and creativity, alignment with vision and theme, potential to enhance the downtown area, durability and maintenance considerations

The selected artists will receive a $35,000 stipend upon completion of the mural. The city will cover fabrication and installation costs, according to the city’s website…
