United Way, Troy library team up to give kids free books

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The United Way of the Greater Capital Region is partnering with the Troy Public Library to ensure local kids have access to books at their home. In celebration of Children’s Book Week, when families sign up their children for a Troy Public Library Card by November 9, they can also enroll them in the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Through the program, they will receive a free book each month to help families build their own libraries at home. Parents said they hope this instills a lifelong love of reading in their children.

“It’s been really great. It’s been a little bit like an extension of the library,” Emmett Catedral said. “We read a lot of the same books over and over at his age, and so, it’s been nice to go, ‘Oh, we have a new book.’ Making sure that we read together is one of our top priorities, and it’s very important to me, personally.”

Organizers said Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has already provided more than 100,000 books to children across the Capital Region. Families can sign up for the program anytime throughout the year…
