Iowa City man faces court after year-long escape following attempted murder charges

IOWA CITY, Iowa — An Iowa City man who fled the country after allegedly beating a woman and leaving her for dead has a court hearing Friday.

Ali Younes is charged with attempted murder, theft, and robbery in a 2022 case where he allegedly strangled a woman until she was unconscious near the Art Building West, then stole her $20,000 earrings.

Younes then allegedly escaped custody before his attempted murder trial was originally slated to start in May of 2023. Younes used Jordanian travel documents to flee to Jordan for more than a year before voluntarily returning to the U.S…
