List: Local food banks, restaurants, community fridges offer meals and groceries as SNAP benefits shrink

With November SNAP benefits being reduced, a number of local organizations and restaurants are stepping up to help people keep food on the table.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced updated guidance for November’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Instead of the 50% cut that was previously announced, benefits will now be reduced by 35%, so most recipients will receive about 65% of their usual amount.

The Louisiana Department of Health confirmed that SNAP benefits will resume for all eligible recipients on Friday. Those who received state-funded emergency benefits earlier this month — including seniors and people with disabilities — will begin receiving federal SNAP benefits Nov. 7.
