Springfield residents like Jerry Snavely are already getting a head start on winterizing their homes. “I’ve drained my hoses. I’ve made sure all the windows are sealed. I’ve closed off the vents to the basement, and I’m getting ready to mulch leaves,” Snavely told us, highlighting the proactive measures needed.

One of the most crucial first steps is to drain and put away your garden hoses. More importantly, don’t forget to cover your outdoor spigots. Matt Cowan, owner of Cowan’s Ace Hardware, shares a cautionary tale: “I forgot to put my spigot covers on in the winter, and in the back of my house, the spigot froze up, froze into the inside of the wall, and busted on an interior wall.
