Drivers traveling over downtown Birmingham might be looking twice at the site of dingy white drapes dangling from an interstate bridge near the BJCC.
The curtain is a protective cover as workers are repainting the steel girders under the four bridges which connect the new I-59/20 bridges with Red Mountain Expressway, explained Jon Paepcke, an ALDOT spokesman.
“Every so often, we must sandblast them and repaint to help preserve the beams,” Paepcke said. “The canvas and chained link coverings you see suspended under the bridges are designed to contain any old paint, tools and debris from falling and control any overspray from hitting the traffic below.”…
