New US-131 Interchange Ramps Now Open, Improving Access for Kalamazoo Residents

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has finished a $19 million expansion of the US-131 interchange with the US-131 Business Route (BR) north of Kalamazoo. The project began in February 2025 and added new ramps from northbound US-131 to eastbound US-131 BR and from westbound US-131 BR to southbound US-131. MDOT states these changes will improve access for residents and businesses.

A ribbon-cutting event took place on Friday for the new ramps. State Senator Sean McCann and Michigan Representative Julie Rogers attended, along with other local officials. They discussed the project’s role in local transit and its connection to Kalamazoo’s complete streets plan.

Senator McCann said the expanded interchange could help development in downtown Kalamazoo and nearby neighborhoods. He also noted the project may improve transportation in the Northside and surrounding areas…
