Umbarger celebration spotlights St. Mary’s Murals at 80

Eighty years ago, Italian Prisoners of War painted murals on the white walls inside St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Umbarger. Parish members don’t want that part of their history to be forgotten, so they are planning activities to commemorate the POWs work.

“The generations are progressing; I think with each generation, there’s a loss of understanding and a loss of knowledge of the history,” said Parish member and event planner Ann Friemel.

To commemorate that history, the church is planning several events called “St. Mary’s Murals at 80, a Legacy of Art and Community.”…
