Resorts and big-city hotels have their appeal, but sometimes, all you want as a traveler is to feel like a local. If that’s the case, I invite you to explore a completely off-the-beaten-path stay outside of Durham, North Carolina. It’s the kind of hidden-away Airbnb that’s perfect for slow travel: thoughtful, meaningful time spent in a wildly beautiful setting.
Welcome to the Timberwood Tiny Home! This quiet retreat feels worlds away from it all, though it’s just 10 minutes from downtown Hillsborough. The tiny home is situated on the corner of eight private acres of land that’s shared by the main house.
And while it really does appear tiny from the outside, this rental delivers big on aesthetics, charms, and luxurious amenities. Step inside and you’ll fall in love with the Scandinavian-inspired decor. I love the light wood interior, dark cabinets, bright linens, and large windows that allow you to admire the beautiful surroundings.
As for logistics, Timberwood Tiny Home is 200 square feet, but inside, you’ll find everything you need to feel right at home. There’s a queen bed, a lofted bed, and a full bathroom, providing enough space to accommodate up to three guests, though it’s most comfortable for a solo traveler or a couple. Please note that this space isn’t ideal for children.
The kitchen is in the main living room area, and it’s got all the essentials: a two-burner induction stove, a small refrigerator, and a freezer. That said, you probably won’t want to do too much cooking here. The hosts recommend exploring nearby restaurants, barbecuing outside, or keeping the meals simple.
And while the inside is lovely and quite cozy, I bet you’ll want to spend most of your stay outdoors. The spacious porch is an ideal spot to simply sit and enjoy the natural beauty of the property. Then, when you’re ready to take your relaxation to a new level, be sure to make use of your private spa, which includes a wood-fired hot tub, barrel sauna, and cold plunge!
Switching between the sauna, cold plunge, and hot tub is therapeutic on many levels. This combination is referred to as contrast therapy and can help reduce muscle soreness, promote relaxation, and improve circulation. Note that you’ll have to prepare the hot tub and sauna in advance, but it’s the perfect amount of time to enjoy your beverage of choice outside or quickly step out for some takeout. One added perk of the sauna—the hosts provide a bucket of water and farm-grown rosemary to enhance the experience.
Still undecided? I’ll leave you with one glowing review from a recent traveler: “I feel so deeply grateful for this magical retreat. I decided to spend my birthday here, and this was the best and most nourishing gift I’ve given myself in a long time.”…
