Restaurants unite to feed Myrtle Beach airport staff during federal shutdown

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — As the longest government shutdown in U.S. history stretches into its 39th day, the Myrtle Beach community has stepped up to support federal employees working without pay at the Myrtle Beach International Airport.

Van Shaw, a resident, has organized a daily lunch initiative for air traffic controllers and technicians affected by the shutdown.

“Just a bunch of restaurant people were talking about it as the Grand Strand. We ought to do something community-wise to say that we care about what’s going on,” Shaw said. “And we knew that the flight controllers were not. The air traffic controllers were not getting a paycheck.”…
