Mat-Su Borough School District no longer displaying, reading Indigenous land acknowledgements

PALMER, Alaska (KTUU) – The Mat-Su Borough School District (MSBSD) is no longer displaying Indigenous land acknowledgment plaques in district schools, nor reading a statement of acknowledgement before official district events.

According to the Mat-Su Sentinel, MSBSD Superintendent Randy Trani sent a district-wide email in August instructing principals to no longer perform the acknowledgements.

The issue traces back to an MSBSD school board meeting on June 4, wherein the topic of Indigenous land acknowledgments was brought up by an attendee in reference to the recent Wasilla High School graduation ceremony…
