ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The dream of every high school football player is to win a state championship. The very first year of the IHSA playoffs was 1974. One of the five teams that won state that year was the East E-Rabs.Many people who saw that team say to this day that it was the greatest Rockford team ever. The rosters included several players who went on to play major college football and who played in the NFL.Eleven years later, East won another state championship. The 1985 E-Rabs were a bit of a Cinderella team winning it all after going 6-3 during the regular season and losing their final two games of the regular season.We look back on those two teams in our ‘Overtime’ Spotlight feature story.
