Howard clocks 2:17 at Indianapolis Marathon, becomes fourth-fastest in Alaska history

Riley Howard’s main goal at the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon was straightforward: break 2:20.

The Anchorage resident and Service High graduate did much more than that, crossing the finish line in a blistering 2 hours, 17 minutes and 11 seconds — averaging a pace of 5:14 per mile — to place ninth overall. Howard also became the fourth-fastest marathoner in Alaska history.

After running a then-personal best of 2:22:24 in April at the Boston Marathon, Howard regrouped and set his focus on a flatter, faster marathon course…
