New Uptown exhibition focuses on classic photos of jazz legends

A new exhibition that intersects Blackness, nostalgia and the rise of the jazz genre opened at the Harvey B. Gantt Center recently.

“Jazz Greats: Classic Photographs from the Bank of America Collection” opened Nov. 7 at the Gantt and features a black-and-white original prints of some of the most recognizable names in the genre.

Among the 33 photos, exhibitioner viewers can expect to find jazz legends Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and others as subjects. There are also photos of community members, landmarks and more.

The majority of the photos were taken between 1920 and the 1980s by several photographers. Viewers can expect to see the work of Chuck Stewart, William Gotlieb, Eduard (Ed) Van Der Elsken and Gordon Parks, among others…
