San Francisco man and his pet dog shot on busy downtown street

Authorities in San Francisco said an investigation is underway after a man and a German shepherd were shot around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday in the city’s central Union Square neighborhood.

Two others sustained minor injuries, including one police officer who fire officials said was bitten by the dog. Neither of the injured victims was taken to the hospital. Medical personnel took the man who was shot to the hospital for treatment, and Animal Care and Control transported the dog to a veterinarian, said fire Lt. Mariano Elias. Both were expected to survive.

According to one witness, the dog was barking at a pedestrian when the woman asked nearby police for help keeping it away. The dog’s owner, who was apparently homeless, became “a little confrontational” when police questioned him…
