‘I never want to leave’: What it’s like to live on this S.F. island that’s full of young people

After his 10-hour days delivering for DoorDash, Sasha Arapinovich sits in his backyard admiring the view of San Francisco’s skyline shimmering across the water. On those breezy fall nights, with little noise beyond the rustle of palm trees, he feels like he hit the housing lottery.

“I really couldn’t have imagined a better situation for myself,” said Arapinovich, a Belarusian immigrant who pays $625 a month for his room in a two-story town house toward the back of a former military base.
