Arrest made following gunfire near University of Iowa campus

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Iowa City Police Departments says a 22-year-old has been arrested following a shooting near the University of Iowa campus on Friday.

Around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, the Iowa City Police says officers responded to the 900 block of East College Street on a report that a person had been shot in the chest. Authorities say witnesses reported hearing gunshots.

Police arrived on scene and determined that no persons had been struck by gunfire. Authorities opened an investigation into the incident and say several persons of interest were developed.

With assistance from the Cedar Rapids Police Department, Iowa City Police arrested 22-year-old Xzavier Herman, of Iowa City, on the following charges:

  • Felon in Possession of a Firearm – Second Offense
  • Going Armed with Intent
  • Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon
  • Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon
  • Use of a Dangerous Weapon in the Commission of a Crime
  • Reckless Use of a Firearm

A criminal complaint states that Herman had engaged in a verbal altercation with the victim, which was escalated when Herman struck the victim in the back of the head with a handgun, knocking him to the ground.
