‘There are no resources’: Beloit has the highest rate of homeless students

BELOIT, Wis. — Homelessness among school-aged kids in Wisconsin is increasing.

According to a Wisconsin Policy Forum report, 20,195 students were identified as homeless during the 2023-2024 school year. That’s about 2.5% of Wisconsin’s total public-school enrollment. And that was a 9.1% increase from the previous year (2022-2023).

The rising costs and general unavailability of housing contribute to the problem, according to Robin Stuht, the homeless liaison and family specialist with the School District of Beloit. She’s served in this role for nearly 20 years, working to connect students and families to help…
