Bus Overturns in Southern California, Hospitalizing 20 After Camp Trip

RUNNING SPRINGS, Calif. – A bus carrying teenagers returning from a camp in the San Bernardino Mountains overturned on a Southern California road Sunday night, sending 20 people to area hospitals. The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. on State Route 330 near Running Springs, approximately 70 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

Authorities reported that 36 individuals, a mix of adults and teens, were on board the bus, which was traveling downhill on its way to Orange County. Some passengers were able to escape the overturned vehicle through a roof hatch, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

In total, 26 patients received treatment at the scene, with three sustaining major injuries. Twenty of those treated were transported to local hospitals by ground ambulances. The remaining passengers either declined medical transport or treatment.

The emergency response was substantial, involving 11 fire engine companies, 11 ambulances, and four chief officers. Crews were able to get the first patients en route to a hospital within 15 minutes of their arrival.

The California Highway Patrol has taken the lead in investigating the cause of the accident. State Route 330 was closed in both directions during the on-scene investigation. Officials confirmed there was no fire or hazardous material exposure resulting from the rollover.
