Footage shows ‘degrading abuse’ led to vulnerable woman’s death in Gaston County

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Two women charged with abusing a vulnerable woman with severe autism in the weeks before her death faced a Gaston County judge for a first appearance hearing on Monday.

During Marlo Wallace and Vera Williams’ court hearings, District Attorney Travis Page revealed security cameras inside the home captured “some of the worst and degrading abuse, both physically and verbal” that he’s ever seen as district attorney. He said investigators were able to restore the deleted footage.

The women are charged with patient abuse and assaulting a person with a disability. Wallace is also accused of concealing Aaliyah Fortner’s death. Fortner, 23, was found dead inside a home on Greenbrook Trail in Dallas last month…
