East Ridge Animal Shelter ‘overflowing,’ urges community to help adopt or foster pets

EAST RIDGE, Tenn. — The East Ridge Animal Shelter is bursting at the seams, and staff say they need the community’s help now more than ever.

Shelter Supervisor Jennie Van Ausdal says the facility is at max capacity, with dogs and cats arriving every day. She says each adoption or foster placement not only saves a life, but also opens up space for another animal in desperate need.

“Our shelter is full; no – overflowing with amazing dogs and cats and we need the community’s help now more than ever to show them that they matter,” Van Ausdal said. “These incredible companion cats and dogs are just waiting for you to come and change not just their lives, but yours as well.

For those who want to help but aren’t ready to adopt, the shelter offers several ways to make a difference:

  • Foster a pet: Temporary fosters provide a safe environment for animals to recover, socialize, or simply take a break from shelter life. It’s a rewarding way to help without a lifetime commitment.
  • Volunteer: Walk dogs, help with laundry, take pictures of animals — every task makes a difference. Spending time with animals also helps reduce stress and boost mood.
  • Spay and neuter services: A recent grant from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture covers costs for qualifying low-income residents through December 2025.
  • Financial donations or supplies: Contributions of money, food, bedding, toys, or cleaning materials help maintain shelter operations and care for animals. Sharing adoptable pet profiles on social media also expands their reach.

Potential adopters are encouraged to meet animals like Rusty, Elvira, Peter Pan, and Reba (all pictured in this story), along with the many other cats, dogs, puppies, and kittens hoping for a forever home…
