GREENSBORO, N.C. — Forty-nine traffic cones lined the sidewalk outside Greensboro City Hall on Monday, each representing a life lost in traffic crashes across the city in 2024. This includes 24 drivers and passengers, 20 pedestrians and five motorcyclists.
City leaders gathered to kickoff Safe Streets Week, an annual campaign promoting road safety and awareness as the city continues to face a persistently high number of traffic deaths.
“Our goal is always to see these numbers drop, so hopefully next year we’ll see fewer cones, but we also recognize that the timing for this event is really critical, because we’re going into some of our most significant months for traffic fatalities, and serious crashes,” said Hanna Cockburn, Greensboro’s Director of Transportation…
