SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Yankton Sioux Tribe has announced a state of emergency as a loss of funding for several programs endangers access to food, energy and tribal revenue.
The Yankton Sioux Tribe’s Business and Claims Committee has formally declared a State of Emergency across the Yankton Sioux Reservation.
DSS: SNAP benefits ‘depend’ on Congressional action
According to a press release, the state of emergency comes because of the ongoing federal government shutdown, stating the funding lapse has halted key services and revenue streams assured by the US government.
Due to the federal government shutdown programs such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) have gone unfunded.
The Yankton Sioux Tribe’s emergency resolution directs all tribal departments and programs including food distribution and LIHEAP, to implement emergency financial contingency plans and utilize all available tribal reserve funds to bridge the funding gap…
