Neon-clad protesters stage ’80s aerobics demonstration outside Portland ICE facility

Federal officers stationed at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in South Portland watched from the rooftop Sunday as a new protest crowd gathered across the street.

About two dozen Fulcrum Fitness members and supporters, dressed in neon leotards, striped knee socks and flashy sneakers, staged a peaceful ’80s-themed aerobics demonstration they called “Sweatin’ Out the Fascists.”

The workout began around 1 p.m. and lasted about an hour. Participants took turns leading the group through synchronized movements to a loud retro soundtrack. A few carried protest signs throughout. At one point, a counterprotester wheeled over a stereo system and blasted competing music, briefly drowning out the aerobics soundtrack.

The group kept dancing. Neighbors, passersby and livestreamers stopped to watch or record. Federal officers remained on the rooftop across the street…
