DCS asks for more staff positions after being accused of cutting jobs

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services asked Gov. Bill Lee for more funding to create new positions to help ease the caseload for staff. However, one lawmaker claimed DCS may have created its own staffing problem.

During a budget hearing last week, DCS Commissioner Margie Quin requested money from Lee to create 150 new state positions and 305 new contracted privatized case manager positions to ease staff case load, which is currently averaging above the 20 cases per manager cap.

Quin told the governor many DCS case managers are handling between 30 and 50 cases each, depending on the category. In addition, DCS attorneys are handling an average of 200 cases each, when the recommended case number is 60.
