Brockport’s historic Erie Canal Lift Bridge reopens after major rehab

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The State Department of Transportation has reopened the 110-year-old lift bridge carrying Route 19 over the Erie Canal in Brockport after a multi-year rehabilitation project.

The steel truss bridge, built in 1915 and listed as a National Historic Landmark, underwent a full modernization that officials say will extend its service life by at least 30 years. Crews installed a new deck, upgraded mechanical and electrical systems for the lift, and replaced more than 80 percent of the truss steel after dismantling the bridge and moving it to a nearby work site.
