100-year-old WWII vet in Springfield recalls service, time in Germany

SPRINGFIELD, Mo – At 100 years old, World War II veteran Ben Lafon can still recall his journey from a Texas farm boy to a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force.

In 2025, finding a World War II veteran who can recall their time serving is rare, but Ben Lafon, who lives in Springfield, carries his memories with him to this day.

“I was born on Sept. 29, 1925, southwest of Fort Worth on my dad’s farm,” Lafon said. “My grandpa raised horses there, and he was a Civil War veteran.”…
