From Frost to Flip-Flops: A Brief Blast of Arctic Air Sweeps the South

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL)-The cold air today is stronger than what we usually feel this time of year. This happened because of a perfect setup in the weather pattern.

A strong area of high pressure in the Southeast moved away, which opened the door for a mid-latitude cyclone — a storm system that moved across the country. That system brought snow to the Midwest and the upper Great Lakes, and it had enough energy to push some Arctic air deep into the South.

Temperatures this morning were very cold, especially in areas with little wind. Some spots dropped as low as 22°F, while most others were in the upper 20s. Surprisingly, we haven’t felt this kind of cold since the big snowstorm in January 2021. The last time we had freezing temperatures was in February 2022…
