‘Bring this story to life’: Upstate nonprofit remembers fallen heroes

ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Honor for Heroes in Anderson was at the American Legion Post 14 to commemorate Veterans Day, but more specifically, an overlooked part of the nation’s history.

The organization hosted a special memorial service honoring the sacrifice of Private Curtis Adams of Anderson. He was one of the Wereth 11 during World War II, a group of soldiers from the all-black 333rd Field Artillery Battalion who were tortured and killed after the Battle of the Bulge.

“The Wereth 11 actually escaped the initial capture, but then was later captured by the German SS, and they were brutally tortured and murdered in a field near the village of Wereth, Belgium,” explained Matthew Hilley, founder and president of Honor for Heroes. “Basically, their story was covered up for many years. It’s our job now to bring this story to life.”…
