Jane Dorotik: A timeline of murder, wrongful conviction and exoneration

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Jane Dorotik, the Valley Center woman accused of murdering her husband in 2000, has settled a lawsuit she filed against San Diego County.

The suit alleged that she was wrongfully convicted and spent almost two decades in prison as the result of a “sloppy” investigation, according to an article published Monday in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

2000: The murder of Robert Dorotik

In February 2000, Jane Dorotik reported her husband, Robert Dorotik, missing after he went out for a jog and did not return home. After a brief search, his body was found on the side of the road just miles from their home.

His death was determined to be caused by blunt force trauma and strangulation, likely by a hammer and rope. Jane Dorotik was arrested shortly thereafter due to evidence of blood stains found in their bedroom. She was found guilty of murder in 2001 and sentenced to 25 years to life.

2020: Jane Dorotik released from prison, conviction overturned

Jane Dorotik was in prison until her release in 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns. Upon her release, she released a statement that said in part: “After fighting for nearly 20 years to overturn my conviction, I am so grateful to finally see this day.”…
