MUSC advises caution and preparedness during cold stretch

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – MUSC emergency physician and professor and chair of the department of emergency medicine Diann Krywko says cold-related injuries can still happen even if temperatures don’t dip below the freezing mark.

“We do have an increase in patients presenting with cold-related illnesses this time of year,” Krywko said. “Over 1,000 deaths a year in the United States from cold-related illnesses. We’re hoping to have none of those here in Charleston. But, there are a high amount of those that actually occur in southern climates.”

To help provide warm clothing to those who need it, MUSC plans to set up a giving tree in its front lobby. They’re accepting donations for things like hats, gloves and scarves. Those items will be available to anyone who could use it…
