Piggly Wiggly adapts to nationwide penny shortage

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Local grocery store customers have been feeling the impact of the penny shortage for weeks, whether they’ve known it or not.

At the Columbus Piggly Wiggly on Woodruff Farm Road, change for cash payments is being rounded up or down to the nearest nickel.

“The most [pennies] we can get from them is two 50-cent rolls, which is a dollar,” explained store manager Marcus Henderson. “Our company put a system in, rounding off.”…
