MIAMI VALLEY, Ohio (WKEF) — As Ohioans begin to receive partial SNAP benefits due to the ongoing government shutdown, local non-profits are stepping up to ensure the community remains fed. Amber Wright, marketing manager at The Foodbank, Inc., highlighted the struggles faced by many, saying, “People are really struggling right now and there’s a lot of uncertainty going on, especially for government workers and families who are receiving SNAP benefits.”
The Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services announced that starting Wednesday, SNAP recipients will receive less than 65% of their usual benefits for November. Some households, particularly those near the eligibility cutoff, may receive no benefits this week.
As of this morning, the state has processed over $66 million in SNAP benefits for 364,000 households, about half of the 716,000 households expected to receive partial benefits this month. In response, local non-profits like the Dayton Foodbank and With God’s Grace are working to fill the gap.
