At the Public Safety Training Facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, Captain Shawn Hyatt is a well-known member of the Greensboro Fire Department. Recently, the department introduced its first therapy dog, Natty, an 11-week-old golden retriever. Natty has become a regular presence among the city’s firefighters, who often interact with her during their shifts. Her presence is intended to provide comfort and support to department personnel.
Captain Hyatt has served with the Greensboro Fire Department for 12 years and coordinates EMT training. He is originally from Greensboro and previously worked in construction and at Cone Hospital’s emergency room before joining the fire department. After three attempts, he was accepted into the department and has since held several roles, including hazmat team member, driver, and captain.
In addition to his leadership responsibilities, Hyatt manages EMT training for both current staff and new recruits. Greensboro’s fire department is certified to conduct its own EMT classes, allowing recruits to complete their training in seven weeks.
