Escambia tackling water quality issues one bayou at a time. Bayou Grande next on list

Escambia County is spending $550,000 in Gulf Coast Restoration Funds to work with a consultant on developing a watershed management plan for Bayou Grande that will look at flooding and stormwater issues, water quality improvements, habitat restoration and recreational opportunities. The plan is part of an overall effort to improve the environment and water quality in the area.

Escambia Natural Resources Director Chips Kirschenfeld says Bayou Grande hasn’t had as many water quality problems as waterways like Bayou Chico, Bayou Texar and Carpenter Creek, but they want to see if stormwater, sedimentation or bacteria is causing any isolated problems in Bayou Grande.

“There are a few areas where sediment has come into Bayou Grande through the stormwater system and has caused some sedimentation issues around people’s docks,” Kirschenfeld said. “That’s one thing that we have received some complaints from over the last few years.”…
