DOWNTOWN AKRON — Summit County Council had the opportunity to meet the Summit County Sheriff’s Office newest K-9 officer, Dino, at its Nov. 10 regular Council meeting.
Chief Larry Brown, from the Sheriff’s Office, introduced deputy Matthew Naelitz and K-9 Dino to members of Council.
Dino is 1 1/2 years old and was imported from Slovakia, according to Naelitz, who said he has had him for about two months. Naelitz said Dino completed his training at Excel K-9 in Hiram, and his two main tasks are firearm detection and apprehension. Dino is currently the only firearms detection dog on the force of 10 K-9s. Brown said every K-9 from the Sheriff’s Office has been trained at Excel, and have all been “exceptional.” He also noted the Sheriff’s Office has added four narcotics K-9s to the Summit County Jail to address drugs coming into the intake area, and since implementing the dogs, he said the overdoses and the amount of drugs coming into the jail has “drastically dropped.”…
