Change on Charter Review Committee bring harsh criticism of new Augusta commissioner

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – It would not be unexpected to hear someone with the Charter Review Committee be given a chance to speak, but in this case not Robert France, and not like this.“I’m being ambushed. I’m being lynched. I’m not being lynched by somebody walking around wearing hoods, I’m being lynched by people that look like me,” said France.France was appointed to the Charter Committee by Commissioner Tanya Barnhill Turnley, but she was defeated last week by Lonnie Wimberly, who had been on the Charter Committee.Commissioner Francine Scott replace Wimberly with Augustus Palmer. And then Wimberly replaced France with Eric Gaines.“The rules are very clear that each commissioner gets the opportunity to select a replacement on the charter committee, and I exercised that for myself,” said Wimberly.France said he wasn’t told about his replacement until right before the meeting, and with Wimberly watching, was given almost 15 minutes to blast his removal, saying under the rules, a member can only be removed for malfeasance or neglect of duty.

“I don’t feel like I’ve been dealt with honestly. I feel like I’ve been hoodwinked. I’ve been bamboozled,” said France.Wimberly said procedure was followed and that’s how the city government works.“I was on a board, and the same thing happened to me. I reported to that board, and they told me at that time, I’ve been replaced on that board,” said Wimberly.“I deserve my due process and I will seek my due process,” said France.

“Will you go to court?”…
