New details emerge in Brooks’ Sandwich House murder trial

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — New body camera footage and key evidence are shedding light on the 2019 killing of Scott Brooks, the beloved co-owner of Brooks’ Sandwich House in NoDa.

The trial for Steven Staples and Terry Connor Jr. resumed Thursday at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse.

Jurors saw body camera video from a search of the home where Staples and his wife were living. Investigators found an FBI jacket, hat, fake badge and a box of .45-caliber ammunition tucked inside a closet. Witnesses testified that while items belonging to Staples and his wife were inside and regularly used, no official documents — including ID cards — linked Staples to the address.

Before lunch, CMPD homicide detective Blair Fitch testified about processing the crime scene the morning Brooks was killed in December 2019. Fitch said nothing inside the restaurant was disturbed, and the shooting happened outside…
