Ohio considers allowing children to work later on school nights

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Ohio legislators are considering changes to minor labor laws, including letting teens work later on school nights.

Ohio legislators sent Senate Bill 50 to the governor’s desk last week. The bill would adjust child labor laws to allow 14- and 15-year-olds to work until 9 p.m. on school nights with parent permission.

Ohio bill to protect corrections officers would eliminate some prison education programs

Proponents of the bill say it would help address critical workforce needs, like difficulties filling positions, and would provide more employment experience for youth. Opponents argue the bill opens the door for possible child labor exploitation.

Current law prohibits kids younger than 16 from working after 7 p.m. during the school year and after 9 p.m. when school is out of session. Senate Bill 50 would not adjust how many hours minors can work, just extend how late they can work with parental permission…
