Kalamazoo’s Sensei Thompson brings home three medals from championships

Comstock resident Marcus Thompson took home three medals at the World Karate & Kickboxing Commission (WKC) World Championships, held Oct. 25-31 in Niagara Falls, New York. That’s the same amount as the entire countries of Ireland and Peru, and one more than Spain. Canada took home the most medals with 880, with the United States in second at 494 and England in third with 113.

Thompson, known as Sensei Thompson at Okinawan Karate Academy, 1837 S. Westnedge Ave., where he’s taught karate for the last 42 years, took home bronze in both traditional weapons and 75kg point sparring, and a silver in traditional forms in his age bracket (48+). This was his third year at this international competition.

“The first year I took a gold medal in sparring and a bronze medal in oar,” Thompson said. “The second year I took a gold medal in the weapons division and a bronze medal in the forms division.”…
